Tornado powers up milling capability

Colchester-Harrison launch of the latest versions of the higher productivity ‘single-hit’ cycle T8MS and T8MSY multi-axis mill/turn centres at EMO 2007 exhibition in Hannover.

Colchester-Harrison is now taking full advantage of the well-proven rigidity and stability advantages generated by the Tornado’s patented ‘Duo-Stable’ construction with the launch of the latest versions of the higher productivity ‘single-hit’ cycle T8MS and T8MSY multi-axis mill/turn centres at EMO 2007 exhibition in Hannover. 

Central to the subspindle (T8MS) version of the Tornado is the new 12 station disc-type, direct drive tool turret that provides new orders of rigidity to enable full exploitation of the machine construction. 

The new Sauter system being exhibited incorporates HSK 83 tool holding to accommodate higher machining rates and has enabled Colchester-Harrison to take full advantage and almost double the power available at the tool to 10 kW.  The cutting speed of the tool is also doubled to 10,000 revs/min for axial and radial approach to the workpiece. 

The Y-axis powered turret cross-feed version in the Tornado T8MSY further exploits the versatility of the machine range especially when cross-milling or drilling off-centre which can be up to ±40 mm. 

Enclosed in the new guarding, featuring the combined livery of Colchester-Harrison for the first time at an international show, the latest Tornado range enables various levels of automation to be fitted in order to further extend the limited manning ‘lights-out’ type operations the Tornado range is now satisfying in most markets.  This guarding will also contain the ultra-high pressure coolant systems, up to 70 bar is available, now required in support of heavier duty cutting cycles.  As a result chip control is improved, tool life enhanced contributing to greater consistency and predictability  of any machining cycle. 

Software enhancements have also been made to cater for users wider requirements for ‘lights-out’ and unmanned periods.  These include tool management able to accommodate ‘in cut’ records or the number of times a tool is used, sister tooling, production scheduling and in-process gauging.  Elements of this software are integrated into a motorised tool setting arm and an inspection probe that serves both main and subspindle areas. 

The Tornado T8MS accommodates a maximum turning diameter of 300 mm and 260 mm on the Y-axis crossfeed turret machine with a maximum chuck to chuck capacity of 625 mm on both machine types.  The standard bar capacity is 66 mm although a large bore option of 82.5 mm is available.  Powered by a 22 kW, 5,000 revs/min spindle, parts can be transferred using ‘kissing spindle’ synchronisation with the 7.5 kW, 6,000 revs/min subspindle at a rapid traverse rate of 30 m/min.  The main spindle chuck size is 254 mm and the subspindle 170 mm with both B- and C-axes fully programmable.  Positioning accuracy is within ±0.005 mm and repeatability is within two microns.
