David Norman, Chief Executive of 600 Group Plc

Business as usual

New Chief Executive of 600 Group, the UK’s largest machine tool group, David Norman, says “My brief is business as usual".

"As a Group, we have powerful, world-leading technologies, a competent world-wide distribution network, and profitable operating companies.  My role is to bring those strengths to bear on the market.  No company gains ascendancy by shrinking and I am looking to achieve supremacy in all aspects of our trading”.

David took up his appointment as Chief Executive of the 600 Group on 7th August with the primary responsibility to make the Group a powerful, vigorous leader in each area of its business.  Amongst its activities to date is the design and manufacture of the prestigious Colchester-Harrison marque of lathes and vertical machining centres, which ranges from proven conventional machines to the latest heavyweight Colchester-Harrison TT6 twin 12 station turret turn-mill centre, development of the world-leading Electrox advanced laser marking technology and manufacture of the unique Gamet super-high precision taper roller bearings as well as the proven Crawford Collet and Pratt Burnerd workholding systems.  In addition to ownership of exceptional technology, it has distribution companies supplying turnkey-engineered solutions and machine tools in the UK (the distinguished 600 Centre), North America, Western and Eastern Europe, Australia, South Africa and a distribution operation in the Far East.

David’s task is to capture the strengths of each area of the Group’s businesses and focus them into a well-honed, finely tuned operation which is profitable, robust and capable of delivering an appropriately engineered solution to customers world-wide.  He says “We will be continuing to do what we do well.  Our marques are robust and supported by an enviable heritage, our technology is second-to-none.  I will be concentrating on ensuring we bring these strengths to bear on the market place in such a way that our customers profit and the Group benefits.  The economy may become challenging but we are well placed to continue to provide our customers with the production solutions they need to resist the credit-crunch or any upturn in competition”.
